Raising a child with autism presents a unique blend of challenges and joys.
As a mother to Joseph, our daily life is a tapestry woven with therapy sessions, learning moments at school, and heartwarming experiences that continually shape our journey.
Morning Activity
Our day begins with a structured morning routine, which provides Joseph with a sense of security and predictability. After breakfast, we engage in sensory integration activity, such as tactile play, to help Joseph regulate his sensory input and prepare for the day ahead. On Weekdays he attends school followed by his therapy sessions.
Afternoon Activity
Joseph’s afternoon routine is thoughtfully designed to blend outdoor play in our backyard with the reinforcement of his therapy-acquired skills and the nurturing of emerging abilities. This approach not only promotes his physical health but also supports his cognitive and social development.
These are examples of his afternoon activities
- Sensory Exploration
We begin with sensory activities that engage Joseph’s tactile and proprioceptive senses. For instance, we have a designated area with sand and water tables where Joseph can dig, pour, and splash. These activities enhance his sensory processing and fine motor skills. Outdoor settings are ideal for such messy play, allowing for uninhibited exploration.
- Obstacle Course Navigation
To improve Joseph’s coordination and body awareness, we set up simple obstacle courses using cones, and balance beams. Navigating these courses helps him practice gross motor skills and sequencing tasks. Activities like these encourage movement and challenge his physical abilities, fostering both strength and confidence.
- Nature Scavenger Hunts
Engaging Joseph in nature scavenger hunts develops his attention to detail and problem-solving skills. We create lists of items commonly found in our backyard, such as specific leaves, rocks, or flowers. As Joseph searches for these items, he practices categorization and enhances his observational abilities. Collecting these natural elements also provides opportunities for creative projects, like crafting nature collages, further stimulating his imagination and fine motor development.
As the day comes to a close, we focus on calming activities to help Joseph unwind. Reading his favorite book, or playing soothing music aids in his transition to bedtime. Maintaining a consistent evening routine has been essential for promoting restful sleep for Joseph.
Pondering
Every day with Joseph brings new lessons and perspectives. While there are hurdles to overcome, the moments of connection, growth, and joy far outweigh the challenges. Sharing our daily experiences not only documents our journey but also serves as a beacon for others navigating similar paths.
Through this blog, I aim to shed light on the realities of raising a child with autism, offering insights, support, and a sense of community to fellow parents and caregivers.
